THAILAND: Question marks over new approach to drug-users

In September 2011, the government of Thailand moved to try and decrease the number of drug-users by 80 percent by adopting a more “softly, softly” approach, rather than sending people straight to jail. Progress on drug addiction is being made, say experts, but challenges remain.

Outbreaks of HIV among IDUs in Greece and Romania — preliminary data suggest no signs of a slowing down in 2012

In 2011, the EMCDDA and ECDC reported that new outbreaks of HIV were occurring in Greece and Romania despite an overall long-term declining trend in newly diagnosed HIV cases among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Europe. Reports received in 2012 continue to suggest increases in HIV prevalence and in rates of newly diagnosed cases among IDUs in these two countries. While in Greece prevention measures are being scaled up, in Romania coverage has declined.

Meth vaccine shows promising results in early tests

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have performed successful tests of an experimental methamphetamine vaccine on rats. Vaccinated animals that received the drug were largely protected from typical signs of meth intoxication. If the vaccine proves effective in humans too, it could become the first specific treatment for meth addiction, which is estimated to affect 25 million people worldwide.

Simulation for Australia relevant also to the UK suggests that offering injectors infection-free injecting equipment has cost-effectively saved/improved lives, and will save the health service money due to averted HIV and hepatitis C related illnesses.
